Consultant Post In Geriatric Medicine
with subspecialty interest in Orthogeriatrics and Bone Health

Applications are invited for a consultant post in Geriatric Medicine with subspecialty interest in Orthogeriatrics and Bone Health at the University Hospitals of Leicester (UHL) NHS Trust, based mainly at the Leicester Royal Infirmary site. The full time post will attract 10 PAs, which includes 1.5 PAs for on-call work.

You will be joining an expanding clinical service that already comprises an enthusiastic, academically focused and progressive team of 15 geriatricians.
Recent developments in service have included ‘interface geriatric’ posts (which fuse acute and community geriatrics and have allowed the development of vertically integrated services for frail older people across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland) as well as the HSJ and NHS Innovations award winning Emergency Frailty Unit (EFU).

The delivery of better care for older people is one of the strategic pillars of the Emergency Department and the EFU is part of several innovations aimed at improving the quality of care for frail older people by building a “frail friendly front door” in UHL. Leicester’s urgent care floor is under-going an extensive £40 million redesign which will see acute service for frail older people aligned closely with emergency and acute medical services.

We are seeking to enhance provision to current orthogeriatric care, joining an existing team of 3 orthogeriatricians and allow possible expansion into bone health clinics which will be run jointly with our Chemical Pathology colleagues.

Additionally, this post will primarily support current acute hospital geriatric care although the increasing integration with community healthcare partners means that there may be some flexible working required across the community interface at times (building upon recent successful changes in the model of care in community hospitals which now employ Advance Nurse Practitioners working closely with geriatricians).

The acute geriatric clinical activity may include one or more of the following activities: acute geriatric on-call work (based on the Acute Frailty Unit), front-door geriatric assessment (based on the Emergency Frailty Unit), geriatric base ward activity. Educational and leadership roles are open to discussion in order to support the development of this forward thinking department.
Applicants must already be on the GMC specialist register or within 6 months of the interview date and have a certificate of completion of specialist training.

As this post is regulated by the Protection of Children Act 1999, The Criminal Justice Courts Act 2000 and the Care Standards Act 2000 an enhanced DBS will be requested by the Trust in the event of a successful application.
The successful appointee will be expected to participate in under-graduate and postgraduate teaching and clinical audit. The University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust consists of three acute teaching hospitals serving the population of Leicestershire. It is fully committed to Continuing Medical Education for consultants.
