Addenbrooke's Hospital

Applications are invited for the post of Consultant Anaesthetist, based at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge for the above post.

The successful candidates will join an expanding, innovative and dynamic department of 80 substantive Consultants and 32 trainees and 15 Senior Clinical Fellows/Clinical Fellows, providing anaesthetic services in this thriving modern teaching hospital, which is the local hospital for people living in the Cambridge area and is a regional/supra-regional referral centre for a number of specialties, including cancer surgery, neurosurgery, transplantation, plastic surgery, vascular and paediatrics. In addition, this post will have involvement in the Major Trauma Centre, which is the hub covering the East Anglia

Obstetric Anaesthesia

Based on the same site as Addenbrooke’s, The Rosie Hospital is a Level 3 maternity and women’s hospital and is the regional centre of excellence for maternity and newborn care. This would be an opportunity to work with a group of 10 other Consultant Obstetric Anaesthetists in The Rosie Hospital, which sees around 5,800 deliveries per year. Our Caesarean section rate is 28% and we have an epidural rate of 31%. As a tertiary centre we see a high proportion of high risk maternity cases and are seeing increasingly complex cases from across the region including women with medical comorbidities and obstetric complications such as abnormally invasive placenta; we have a four bedded obstetric close observation unit, staffed by a dedicated high risk midwifery team, which admits over 60 women per month for Intensive Care Society Level 1 and 2 care. There are 6 antenatal anaesthetic high-risk clinics per month and a monthly multidisciplinary clinic for women with cardiac disease. As part of the obstetric anaesthesia group the successful candidate will undertake a regular obstetric session, cover ad-hoc sessions and be part of the obstetric anaesthesia on-call team.

Transplant Anaesthesia

The successful candidate will join a team of 10 Liver Transplant Anaesthetists, covering a dedicated transplant theatre 24/7 for liver and multivisceral transplant activity. At present we average between 90-100 liver, and 12-15 multi-visceral, transplants per year, with a year on year increase in these numbers. We are actively involved in the research program into organ optimisation using machine perfusion and are establishing a live donor service for livers. This post will include sessions in other surgical subspecialties in addition to transplantation, according to a mutually agreed job planning.

General Anaesthesia

Being a tertiary centre for the region in a wide variety of surgical specialties, this post will allow the successful candidate to choose an area of sub-specialisation according to interest, whilst maintaining a broad involvement in general anaesthesia. This includes all specialties (for example trauma – we are the Major Trauma Centre for the East of England, vascular, colorectal, upper GI and other major cancer work) with the exception of cardiothoracics, at present.  The post includes participation in the departmental on call rota.
Applicants should be fully registered with the GMC and have a CCT in Anaesthesia or be within six months of award of CCT at the time of interview.

Further information, in the first instance, may be obtained from Dr Hemantha Alawattegama, Specialty Lead for Anaesthesia or Dr Rowan Burnstein, Clinical Director, via the Anaesthetic Dept. on 01223 216292 or by e-mail, or
