Emergency Medical Retrieval and Transfer Service (EMRTS CYMRU)

EMRTS Cymru is now recruiting for a National Director who will provide outstanding vision, leadership and management to ensure that EMRTS is established as a world class clinical pre-hospital service. The post is offered on the basis of a long term secondment/fixed term contract. The Emergency Medical Retrieval and Transfer Service for Wales (EMRTS Cymru) is a new service providing consultant-delivered pre-hospital critical care across Wales. It was launched in April 2015 and is a partnership between the Wales Air Ambulance Charity, NHS Wales and the Welsh Government.

This innovative service delivers pre-hospital critical care for all age groups; time-critical, life or limb-threatening adult and paediatric transfers from peripheral hospitals requiring specialist intervention at a receiving hospital; conveys neonatal teams to distant time-critical cases by air and supports midwife units and home deliveries by stabilising neonates and women with life-threatening problems, transferring them to a consultant-led delivery unit with enhanced neonatal and maternal pre-hospital critical care. The service also provides a variety of roles at major incident or mass-casualty events and, for the first time in Wales, a Strategic Medical Advisor is available for 24 hour cover.

This exciting role needs an established consultant with an excellent knowledge and extensive experience of working within an established aero – medical or emergency road based pre-hospital service as well as undertaking secondary retrievals/transfers between health care facilities. As the National Director your working week will include sessions in both clinical and managerial environments.

As a high profile, collaborative post within NHS Wales, the successful candidate will be required to work with internal and external stakeholders to develop the service strategies and will be expected to provide transformational leadership and promote high standards through robust operational and clinical governance.

Demonstrable experience of strategic planning and managing change is essential, as is experience of team management and development issues at a senior level. We are looking for someone who can combine enthusiasm, commitment and first-rate communication skills with dynamism to take our shared goals through to service delivery in conjunction with our valued partners.

The National Director will ensure a vibrant research and education programme is in place, demonstrating the importance we place on continuous improvement and learning in the service.
