An opportunity is available to join the Upper GI team based at one of the UKs newer teaching hospitals at an exciting time in its history. 

The University Hospitals of North Midlands Regional Oesophagogastric Unit is the specialist hub for a cancer network covering Staffordshire, Shropshire and South Cheshire serving a catchment population of 2 million.  Each year the unit performs 80 – 90 oesophagogastric cancer resections.

There are currently 11 Upper GI Surgeons employed with plans to increase to 13. 

The UHNM oesophagogastric surgical team includes Mr Duncan Beardsmore, Mr Oliver Priest and Mr George Bouras. There are also 4 separate Pancreatico-Biliary and 4 Bariatric Surgeons. 

This post holder will be responsible for regular out-patient clinics, day case operating and associated activities based at RSUH and/or County Hospital.  All major surgical sessions, MDTs and on call responsibilities will be based at RSUH. This post will also help develop outreach services to Leighton Hospital in South Cheshire.  UHNM offers a wide range of clinical services on the Royal Stoke site including cardiothoracic surgery, interventional radiology and is a Major Trauma Centre.

The post includes General Surgery on-call commitments with 2 GI surgeons (one upper GI and one colorectal) covering on call 0800h – 1900h 7 days a week at 1:11 frequency.  During this on call period consultants are free from elective commitments.

The Trust houses a large multidisciplinary undergraduate and two postgraduate training centres. 

There are close links with the University of Keele, and the post holder will be expected to contribute to teaching programmes. 

The Royal Stoke University Hospital is situated on the edge of Stoke on Trent and Newcastle under Lyme.  County Hospital Stafford is approximately 15 miles from RSUH and reached by excellent road links.

Applicants must be on or be within 6 months of gaining entry to the GMC Specialist Register with experience in General and Upper GI/Oesophagogastric surgery.
