Applications are invited for a Consultant in Anaesthetics with an interest in Perioperative Medicine based at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Gateshead.

The post adds to our current team of 26 consultant anaesthetists and intensivists and 3 speciality doctors. The Department covers 12 theatres, obstetrics and ECT. It also provides support for remote specialities. Theatre specialities include vascular, colorectal, gynaecology, gynae oncology and breast surgery, including reconstruction work.

There is a large amount of Trauma and orthopaedic work allowing conduct of complex regional block techniques. An emergency theatre is staffed and available 24/7. Theatre workload is currently circa 12000 cases per annum. There is a well-established Consultant led Pre-assessment Unit supporting same day admission. Clinics consist of 3 High Risk clinics, 2 CPEX clinics and 1 combined CPEX/ERP clinic per week. Critical Care is a 14 bedded unit and admits approximately 1200 patients per annum.

This is a post with on-call commitments on the general theatre/obstetric rota.

In addition to high quality clinical care, the Department is committed to under & postgraduate teaching audit and research. This is supported by a simulator centre within the clinical skills block.

The post is tenable on a whole time or part time basis and the pay and terms and conditions of service for this post are subject to the Whitley Council Terms and Conditions of Service – Consultants (England 2003).

The appointee will be expected to possess FRCA or equivalent, or to show evidence of equivalent training and experience, and to be included or eligible for inclusion (within 6 months) on the GMC Specialist Register.

The postholder will work flexibly with Consultant colleagues within the wide remit of the Department’s activity. The postholders will also be expected to play a major role in teaching and training of junior medical staff and multi disciplinary teams.
