Applications are invited for the post of Consultant in Microbiology and Infection (10 Programmed Activities) at Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust commencing 1st September 2107. The post has arisen through early retirement of a colleague.
The successful applicant will join a vibrant and rapidly growing team of eleven consultants in the Department of Microbiology and Infection. Between us we deliver microbiology, virology, infectious diseases and acute medicine services to the trust. We have strong academic links with the Department of Global Health and Infection at Brighton and Sussex Medical School where three consultants hold joint contracts. The PHE regional microbiologist for the South East is based at the trust.
Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals is a regional teaching hospital, providing general acute services to Brighton and Hove and Mid Sussex as well as tertiary services for patients across Sussex and the South East of England. Working as one hospital across two sites in Brighton and Hayward’s Heath, we treat over half a million patients a year.

The department of Microbiology & Infection provides a wide variety of Microbiology/Virology diagnostics, including a state-of-the-art molecular diagnostic laboratory, as well as clinical services in microbiology, virology, infectious diseases and OPAT; infection control and antimicrobial stewardship services; and teaching, academic and R&D activity to the Trust at both its main sites (the Royal County Hospital in Brighton and the Princess Royal Hospital in Hayward’s Heath), the regional burns and plastic surgery units at Queen Victoria Hospital in East Grinstead, and Brighton & Sussex Medical School, where infection and immunity is a major research theme. The department is also a Public Health England collaborating laboratory and the base for the PHE regional Microbiologist for the South East.
The counties of Surrey and Sussex provide an ideal mix of beautiful countryside (the North Downs, the South Downs and an Area of Out-standing Beauty around Box Hill); vibrant city life in Brighton and via easy access to London; a wonderful range of National Trust, National Heritage and other places of interest, such as Wakehurst Place, the Bluebell railway, Epsom racecourse, Brighton & Hove Albion’s Amex Stadium, and many wineries; excellent schools and colleges; and easy access to Europe and further afield via Gatwick Airport and the nearby Channel Tunnel.
This post is based at the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton & Princess Royal Hospital in Haywards Heath and the successful candidate will undertake clinical activity on both these sites and at Queen Victoria hospital in East Grinstead, where the regional burns and plastic surgery unit is based, on a rotational basis
The post is open to suitably-qualified specialists in Medical Microbiology at consultant level or specialist trainees within six months of obtaining their CCT accreditation on the date of appointment. Joint accreditation in either Infectious Diseases or Virology would be an advantage.
