Frontier Pathology NHS Partnership Consultant Chemical Pathologist

We are looking for an outstanding clinician and leader to join our senior Clinical Biochemistry team consisting of two full-time medical consultant chemical pathologists and 3.6 WTE clinical scientists. This is a full-time (10 PA) replacement consultant post following retirement. The post will provide comprehensive clinical biochemistry services for Frontier Pathology, an NHS Partnership between Brighton & Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust (BSUH) and Surrey & Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust (SASH). Suitably qualified candidates may be eligible for an honorary academic appointment at Brighton and Sussex Medical School.

Frontier Pathology is a contractual joint venture between its Member Trusts, which came into effect on 1st April 2015. We are an innovative partnership of NHS pathology services, established to deliver pathology services for clinicians and their patients in Brighton, Surrey and Sussex. This post offers the opportunity to lead the development of Clinical Biochemistry services in a wide variety of settings, serving our stakeholding Trusts, other NHS Trusts, private hospitals and primary care organisations as well as new customers as our specialist and molecular repertoire develops.

The post will be based at Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust, which will be the primary employer, with an honorary contract at Surrey and Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust.

Applicants must hold FRCPath or equivalent and must be on the GMC Specialist Register (or be within six months of being included in the register).

Your role will be to lead the delivery and development of a comprehensive clinical biochemistry service for all users of the laboratory, in a team-based approach in conjunction with your consultant and clinical scientist colleagues based at BSUH and SASH. You will be committed to the improvement of quality of clinical care, take a lead role in clinical liaison and audit, and have a commitment to teaching, participating in clinical teaching of undergraduate and junior medical staff. You will be encouraged to develop clinical research activity and there will be the opportunity for development of outpatient clinical services (for example lipid, endocrinology, metabolic bone, renal stone, bariatric medicine) in conjunction with the relevant clinical teams at both Trusts, on the basis of service demands and your interests, experience and expertise.

At BSUH, the main Clinical Biochemistry laboratory is sited at the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton with a smaller laboratory at Princess Royal Hospital in Haywards Heath. Together, the laboratories provide full clinical and analytical services. Special interest areas include lipids, automation and analytical techniques, toxicology, endocrinology, renal calculi, statistical analysis of large clinical data sets and tandem mass spectrometry. At SASH, there is one Integrated Blood Sciences laboratory sited at East Surrey Hospital in Redhill.

Brighton & Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust is a major trauma centre and regional teaching hospital. The Brighton campus includes the Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital and the Sussex Eye Hospital. We also provide services at Bexhill Hospital, the Hove Polyclinic, Lewes Victoria Hospital and the Park Breast Care Centre in Brighton and District General Hospital services to our local populations in and around the City of Brighton and Hove, Mid Sussex and the western part of East Sussex. We also provide more specialised and tertiary services for patients across Sussex and the south east of England. Surrey & Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust is a large acute Trust and trauma unit serving a population of 535,000 in the Surrey/Sussex border in the Redhill and Crawley area.

Prospective candidates are encouraged to telephone in the first instance, and then arrange to visit.
