Care of the Elderly Medicine Consultant Physician
An excellent career opportunity is available to join a dynamic, progressive, friendly and supportive team of consultants in managing the care of frail elderly patients.
Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is situated in an area of outstanding natural beauty with the potential for a very positive work life balance.
In developing our departmental five-year vision, we have secured funding for another consultant post, predominantly based at Cheltenham General Hospital. This post offers the opportunity to join our successfully established and growing Older Persons’ Assessment and Liaison (OPAL) Service, in parallel with opportunities to pursue subspecialty interests across care of the elderly medicine.
The OPAL Service is growing in strength since conception earlier in 2015, with the recent appointment of a third consultant physician and second nurse practitioner in Gloucester, increasing the services we offer in managing the presentation of the acute frail elderly. Positive working relationships with the Emergency Department and our Acute Medicine colleagues are enhancing changes in culture and developing better working practices, supported by a multidisciplinary Integrated Discharge Team based at the front door.
The foundation behind future departmental plans is a cohesive elderly care department, which currently consists of 6 consultants at GRH and 3 at CGH. Our ambition is to expand our team over the next five years to further develop the OPAL service which will include the implementation of a dedicated acute frailty unit. We also want to develop a new Surgical liaison service, and continue to expand our services in: Orthogeriatrics, Stroke, Parkinson’s disease, Falls, and develop Geriatrician led community teams.
Quality is paramount and our vision is long-term, so the right job role can be tailored to the strengths of the individual if successful at interview.
This post has widespread support from NHS Gloucestershire and Gloucestershire Care Services as well as Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
Candidates applying for this post will have the opportunity to develop existing skills and contribute to the knowledge pool by teaching and supporting other clinical and non-clinical team members.
