City Hospital, Birmingham

We are looking for an inspirational Consultant Neurologist who will support and expand the quality services our Trust already offers. The successful
candidate will complement the expertise of the other team members: 2 Consultant Neurologists (David Nicholl and Arul Sivaguru), Associate Specialist (Dr Ismail) and Professor (Carl Clarke) in our large teaching trust, one of the leading providers of neurology services in the West Midlands to a culturally diverse population.

This post based at City Hospital, Birmingham and Sandwell General Hospital covers the area local to Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust as well as providing Neurological services sub-regionally. Experience in general adult neurology with a subspecialty interest is required to help further develop this already expanding service.

The Trust is one of the largest teaching Trusts in the United Kingdom with a reputation for excellent, friendly staff who provide high quality care from City
Hospital in Birmingham and Sandwell General in West Bromwich. Both are busy acute hospitals providing many specialist services and a broad range
of emergency services, including Accident & Emergency at both sites.

The Trust has circa 900 beds and serves a population of over 500,000. The Trust is a key partner along with the local Clinical Commissioning Group, PCTs and local authorities in the “Right Care Right Here” programme which seeks to deliver an ambitious redevelopment of local health services. Following a very successful public consultation, implementation of the programme is underway with a wide range of secondary care services now being provided via new models of care in community locations.

The programme includes one of the largest investments in the UK in new facilities in both the acute and community sectors as well as a successful reconfiguration of neurology/stroke in-patient services onto the Sandwell site. As part of this programme, in October, 2018, we will open our eagerly awaited Midland Metropolitan Hospital, putting us firmly on the map as one of the nation’s leading provider of integrated care. It will bring all of our acute services onto one site, promoting better patient safety and patient experience.

Applicants must possess recognised training and broad experience in Clinical Neurology (and full registration with the GMC. Applicants must be on the GMC’s Specialist Register, or be within 6 months of achieving CCT in Neurology.

The Neurology service at SWBH NHS Trust provides care for the population of West Birmingham and Sandwell and is supported by comprehensive
neurophysiology (Drs Mytheen and Suliman) and imaging services. Specialist clinics run in Movement Disorders, Stroke, MS, Epilepsy, Headache, and Neuro-Ophthalmology. The post is linked to the Queen Elizabeth Neurosciences Centre for neurosurgical and other specialised services. Any applicant with a neurology sub-specialty interest that will help expand our service will be of interest- although an interest in either stroke, MS, epilepsy, headache, movement disorders would be desirable. The successful appointee will also be expected to participate in the on-call rota for neurology/stroke. There is no general medical component.

The Trust has a very good reputation for undergraduate and postgraduate teaching with strong links to the University of Birmingham and Health Education West Midlands. Prof Carl Clarke and Dr David Nicholl run the highly successful Birmingham Movement Disorders course. All departmental members are actively involved in clinical trials and a research interest would be strongly supported for a suitably qualified applicant.

The area boasts affordable housing with popular residential districts such as Harborne and Sutton Coldfield an easy commute to either of the main
hospital sites. There are a number of very good schools and colleges locally (including a number of independent and grammar schools such as the King Edwards Schools). Birmingham is a very green city with more than 8,000 acres of green space including impressive parks around the city. Due to
our central location and good motorway connections we are in easy reach of a number of beautiful rural locations including the Peak District, Cannock
Chase, the Lickey Hills and the Cotswolds. The Trust offers a competitive relocation package.

For an informal discussion please contact Dr David Nicholl Consultant Neurologist and Clinical Director – Neurology/Neurophysiology, on telephone: 0121 507 4588.
