Applications are invited for two Clinical Fellow posts in Adult Critical Care Medicine, for six months starting in August 2017. We wish to appoint two enthusiastic doctors to join our team in Aberdeen.  Applications from those with a certificate of completion of training (CCT) wishing to gain additional experience in Critical Care are also welcomed.

Although the posts are not recognised as training positions by the Postgraduate Dean or Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine they will be extremely useful for those wishing to gain additional knowledge and skills in Critical Care Medicine.  They will also be suitable for those seeking additional experience in Critical Care for equivalence (CESR) applications.

These posts can provide flexible training and we would welcome discussion about how these posts can be tailored to individual needs.  Opportunities are available to develop new and additional skills in ex-tracorporeal life support, echocardiography, education and simulation, quality improvement and research. Candidates will have the opportunity to negotiate some sessions in their own particular field of interest.

Successful applicants will join a dedicated team of 14 Critical Care Consultants in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), in Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.  The ICU is a sixteen bedded general unit receiving around 800 patients each year requiring multiple organ support.  We admit patients from across the North of Scotland and the Northern Isles and also receive patients from shipping and off-shore oil installations.  A six bedded Cardiothoracic ICU sits adjacent to the General ICU and admits around 600 patients per annum.
All major specialties are covered within the ICU (with the exception of transplant surgery) including Cardiac and Thoracic Surgery, Major Vascular Surgery, Major Head and Neck Surgery, Plastics, Neurosurgery and Major Trauma.  The ICU provides Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygen (ECMO) support for patients from across Scotland; it is an ELSO centre of excellence and a surge centre for the UK ECMO network.

Aberdeen Royal Infirmary (ARI) is the largest hospital within NHS Grampian. It is situated on a self-contained 125 acre site at Foresterhill, to the north west of the city centre, and is one of the largest hospital complexes in Europe.  The campus houses Aberdeen Maternity Hospital, Royal Aberdeen Children’s Hospital, the Scottish National Hyperbaric Centre, the University of Aberdeen Medical and Dental School, University Institute of Medical Sciences, Health Services Research Unit, and the world renowned Rowett Research Institute.

ARI has a catchment population of over 600,000 across the North of Scotland, and admits approximately 100,000 patients per annum.  It is a tertiary referral centre for the Grampian and Highland regions and the Northern Isles.  It has been identified as one of a number of potential Major Trauma Centres in Scotland. Close links with the University of Aberdeen have made ARI a centre of pioneering medical research in a number of fields.

Aberdeen is a cosmopolitan city that offers a great range of cultural activities.  Its close proximity to beautiful coastline, hills and awe-inspiring countryside makes it ideal for those seeking an exciting outdoor lifestyle.
