Leighton Hospital

Nestled in the heart of Cheshire, with green fields bordering the site on every side, Mid Cheshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust staff benefit from great work, home, education and leisure opportunities. The Trust has three sites, including its headquarters at Leighton Hospital in Crewe – 35 minutes from Manchester or Liverpool and less than an hour away from Birmingham, yet only half an hour away from the Peak District. There are some excellent day nurseries and schools in the local area, including 22 Ofsted “Outstanding Providers”.

The Trust has a formal clinical partnership with its nearby University Hospital, benefits from local universities in Crewe (Manchester Metropolitan University)and in Chester.

In addition, strong clinical and academic links exist with the University Hospital of North Midlands.

The Trust was rated as ‘Good’ by the CQC from its October 2014 full inspection, has a good reputation for research and benefits from some of the very latest clinical facilities; these include Critical Care, neonatal intensive care, a new suite of state-of-the-art theatres and a dedicated day case Treatment Centre.

The Trust has invested significantly in recent years in clinical expansion and hospital mortality is ‘as expected’ across the range of indicators.

Applications are invited for a Consultant General Surgeon/Upper GI Surgeon and the department would support applications from surgeons with a subspecialty interest within Upper GI Surgery at Mid Cheshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The successful candidate will join a team of nine General Surgery Consultants who sub-specialise in upper and lower GI surgery based at Leighton Hospital in Crewe. This is a new post to increase capacity for general surgical work with an on-call commitment of 1:8 (potentially moving to a 1:10), outpatient and inpatient commitments including endoscopy sessions.

The department is well supported by six Registrars, one GPST, two CSTs, three Trust appointed Junior Trainees for service and six F1’s.

All Consultants are based at Leighton Hospital with additional outlying clinics and endoscopy sessions being undertaken at the Victoria Infirmary, Northwich. You will also be required to participate fully in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and will be expected to promote Clinical Governance within the department.

Applicants must have full registration with the GMC including a License to Practice, and be on the Specialist Register (or be within six months of obtaining their Certificate of Completion of Training).

The post is offered on a full-time basis; however, the Trust would welcome discussion with individuals looking for a more flexible working pattern to support a different work life balance.
