It has a busy local airport offering access to many European destinations. There are good rail links to London with commuting time of about 45 minutes.

The department provides a comprehensive surgical pathology service, including diagnostic cytopathology, an autopsy service, breast and cervical screening services for South Essex. The current workload is in the order of 21,000 requests per annum. A wide and interesting range of biopsy material is submitted for examination, a substantial proportion of which is diagnostic work for the Trust's Cancer Centre. There is a well-developed immunohistochemistry service to support the diagnostic process, which is responsive to increasing demands from the Clinical Oncologists.
