Consultant Psychiatrist –General Adult Psychiatry

NHS Dumfries & Galloway provides mental health services to a total population of around 150,000 in a largely rural area of South West Scotland. We are seeking to recruit a Consultant in General Adult Psychiatry to provide general psychiatric services to the Stewartry sector of the region.
The post-holder will provide for the general adult psychiatric needs for the 18-65 age group in the Stewartry area which has a population of approx. 14,000 working age adults. The post-holder will provide psychiatric consultant input to in-patient beds at the state of the art, purpose built Midpark Hospital in Dumfries. In-patient responsibility will extend to patients from three sectors: Stewartry, Annandale & Eskdale and Wigtownshire. The post-holder will offer out-patient clinics at various sites within the Stewartry locality, consultant support for the Stewartry Community Mental Health Team, and consultant support to colleagues in primary care in this sector.
The clinical commitments are such that one PA could be available to develop a special interest depending on the successful candidate’s areas of interest and the needs of the service. One PA will be designated for supporting professional activities, subject to consultant job planning.
The on-call commitment is shared between consultants across psychiatry.
There are specialist services in old age psychiatry (including specialist memory clinics),learning disability psychiatry, alcohol and drug misuse, forensic psychiatry and eating disorders.
Educationally, the service is part of the NHS Scotland Deanery (west) and carries outFY2 training, General Practitioner training and Core Psychiatric training as well as Higher Psychiatric Training. In addition, medical students from the universities of Edinburgh and Dundee receive psychiatric training here.
Dumfries & Galloway is an area of considerable natural beauty and out with Dumfriestown, it is largely agricultural and forested. It is easily accessed and has good road and rail links to Glasgow, Edinburgh and Carlisle. The region offers a high quality of lifeto people who live here.

Applicants should already be on the Specialist Register or be within six months of obtaining their CCT (or equivalent) in adult psychiatry and should hold full GMC registration.
