Job Description

Job Title:  Medical Director

Responsible to:  Chief Executive Officer

Accountable to:  CEO / Head of Clinical Services (on a day-to-day basis)

Accountable for: Caldicott, Revalidation, Medical Advisory Committee, Clinical Governance

Job Summary

  • The Medical Director is a member of the management team and is expected to contribute to the overall strategic direction of the company.
  • The postholder will provide clinical advice and information to the management team and advise and assist the CEO and Head of Clinical Services in the execution of their responsibilities for the management of the company in relation to clinical matters.
  • The Medical Director will become the nominated Responsible Officer for all Independent Medical Practitioners undertaking work on behalf of the company.
  • The Medical Director is the accountable officer for the demonstration of adequate assurance on quality and clinical governance for services provided by the company.The postholder will also ensure that systems are in place for the development of quality and the identification and minimisation of risk where standards fall below that required in conjunction with the Head of Clinical Services and the Head of Nursing.

Essential Desirable

Education/ Qualifications

Full GMC Registration

Medical Qualification and appropriate Royal College membership or Fellowship

Management Qualification

Post Graduate Qualification in Clinical Governance

Postgraduate Medical Qualification

Evidence of continuous learning and professional development

Unblemished registration with the GMC       

Skills and Experience

Substantial clinical experience at Consultant level or equivalent

Experience in medical management

Good reputation as a clinician and clinical leader with a proven track record of producing high quality results in the management and leadership of clinical services

Experience of building organisational capabilities

Experience of managing clinical governance

Previous Medical Director experience

Previous experience working within Abortion Services

Previous experience working within a Sexual Health Service.
