The Department of Infectious Diseases at Heidelberg University Hospital is seeking a 

“Chief Senior Physician” 

to head the “Clinical Tropical Medicine” Unit. This function will include active patient care, as research as well as undergraduate and postgraduate teaching. In addition to outpatient care for patients exposed to infectious diseases in tropical and subtropical countries, the position holder will provide consultation services and in-patient care support on parasitic and other infectious diseases across the whole range of University Hospital Departments. The unit also offers a range of special clinics for patients with echinococcosis, extrapulmonary TB and Familial Mediterranean Fever. 

Prerequisites are a clinical specialist degree in infectious diseases or equivalent qualifications, as well as formal training and long-term experience in the clinical management of parasitic and tropical diseases. An original line of research in the field of parasitic and tropical diseases, as evidenced by a strong publication record, is further required. Experience in clinical cohort studies is desirable. 

The candidate is expected to be interested and experienced in interdisciplinary and international collaborations. Within Heidelberg University, there is particular strong potential for collaboration with the laboratory sciences of infectious diseases as well as health systems and population health research in Africa and Asia. The applicant does not have to be a German speaker, but the candidate should be willing to acquire working knowledge of German during her/his first two years of employment. The Faculty of Medicine would support this skills development, as needed.
