2 Consultant Upper GI Surgeons
We are seeking to recruit enthusiastic, innovative and progressive Consultants to join our general and upper GI surgery team. These are replacement posts and will complete our three consultant upper GI team.
The Trust is currently building the 670-bed Midlands Metropolitan Hospital which will bring all in-patient care at SWBH onto one site. Building commenced in 2016 with opening planned for October 2018. It will provide state-of- the-art treatment and care for patients from Sandwell and across the region and will become the civic heart of the area and a point of pride for the community.
The post-holders would be expected to support and contribute to the development of the upper GI service. These posts primarily involve benign work, however there is a commitment to the diagnosis, staging and palliation of upper GI cancers and there is a close working relationship with the local cancer centre.
City Hospital is the home of the Birmingham Treatment Centre and Sandwell Hospital has a new Emergency Assessment Unit as well as having dedicated surgical wards for both elective and emergency patients. There are excellent links with gastro-intestinal medicine across the Trust and well established support from specialist nursing services. Excellent imaging facilities exist within the Trust including MRI, spiral CT, ultrasound and nuclear medicine. Endoscopic ultrasound, oesophageal manometry and pH studies are also available within the Trust, with the addition of oesophageal impedance facilities in the near future.
Along with 6 colorectal, 2 general surgical colleagues and one breast surgical colleague you will also provide emergency general surgical cover for the Trust (Team of 12). All colleagues are required to work across the trusts main sites, although all elective general/colorectal surgical inpatient activity takes place on the Sandwell site.
There is a full postgraduate programme supported by modern Medical Education Centres and clinical library with good IT links. The appointees will be expected to contribute to the teaching of medical students and junior doctors. There are close links with the University of Birmingham and the successful applicants may be granted honorary senior lecturer status within the University. An interest in and ability to undertake research would be welcomed.
Applicants must be included on the GMC Specialist Register or be within 6 months of their expected date of receipt of a CCT at the time of the interview. The appointee is required to have wide experience and training in Upper GI / General Surgery.
