Newcastle University is a thriving international community of more than 17,000 undergraduate and 6,000 postgraduate students from over 130 countries worldwide. Our mission as a world-class civic university means we apply our academic excellence to real world challenges.
We are looking to recruit highly motivated and enthusiastic individual
(Core trainee or ST3 onwards in Cardiology or Academic trainees) to work on
the BHF SENIOR-RITA Trial, a UK wide study conducted by Newcastle University and Newcastle Clinical Trials Unit.
Our population is ageing. Age is a powerful predictor of adverse events following acute myocardial infarction and percutaneous coronary intervention: adjusted odds for in-hospital death increase by 70% for each 10-year increase in age. Older patients are often frail with up to a half of older patients (≥75 years) admitted with non-ST segment
elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI) being severely frail. These frail older patients have a 4-fold increased risk of death at 1-year and yet are often denied coronary revascularisation because of fear of complications and causing harm. The goals of this study are to determine the benefits and risks of invasive coronary angiography and coronary revascularisation in high-risk frail older patients presenting with NSTEMI and receiving optimal medical therapy. We will determine if a routine invasive strategy reduces one-year cardiovascular death and non-fatal myocardial infarction compared
with a conservative treatment strategy in older patients with NSTEMI.
You must have full GMC registration with a licence to practice. Relevant cardiovascular experience and prior clinical experience with care of patients and involvement in recruiting to clinical studies in outpatient clinics and in-patient settings is essential.
