Applications are invited for the post of Consultant Stroke Physician at Northampton General Hospital NHS Trust. This is a replacement post, due to retirement, to join our dedicated, enthusiastic team of experienced multi-disciplinary stroke specialists.

The service has embraced a model of inclusive stroke care from hyperacute care through to community rehabilitation, as part of the same team and under the same management.

Northampton General Hospital has a 12 bed Hyperacute Stroke unit and an adjacent 28 bed Acute and Rehabilitation ward with both areas having access to 7 day therapy. In addition there are 12 community stroke beds on a different site with consultant input from our team.

Stroke Thrombolysis is provided 24/7, on site, by a consultant led team, working a well-established pathway, with the use of telemedicine out of hours. There are optional infrequent medical on call evening sessions.

A Stroke Specialist nurse is present at all times, taking calls directly from the ambulance service, and facilitating the hyper acute and acute stroke pathway.

We have an experienced and comprehensive Community Stroke Team, who provide Early Supported Discharge and ongoing Community Stroke Rehabilitation for stroke patients across the whole county, seeing 500 patients/ annum. They attend weekly hospital stroke MDTs to facilitate timely discharge and provide 6 month reviews for all stroke patients in the County.

There are TIA clinics 7 days per week supported by radiology and vascular imaging and dedicated neuroradiology and neurovascular meeting every week to discuss our stroke and neurovascular patients.

You will join our team at an exciting time. Northampton General Hospital has approved the building of a new 60 bed Acute Assessment Unit, and an onsite Primary Care Assessment Unit, both due to open in the Summer of 2018. It is expected that this will enhance our ability to improve our stroke pathway.

The team constantly strive to improve the experience for all patients across the stroke pathway and expand the diagnostic options for patients admitted to the hyperacute unit and this includes the development of a stroke thrombectomy service for our patients.

There are plenty of opportunities for a new colleague to develop and improve the service to maintain our overall A in SSNAP, and to expand the research portfolio, through our membership of the local Stroke Research Network. Teaching programmes for students, junior doctors and other members of the MDT are very active, including a Stroke Journey Course at Northampton University.

Northampton General is a large DGH providing regional vascular, stroke and renal services for Northamptonshire and there is on site interventional cardiology and cancer services.

There are excellent education, childcare and sports facilities on site.

Applicants are required to be on the GMC specialist register for geriatric medicine or within six months of expected CCT at the time of interview. Specialist Certification in Stroke Medicine is desirable but not essential.
