University Hospital Lewisham

Consultant in Paediatric Emergency Medicine (with MRCPCH or FCEM)

Applications are invited for a Consultant in Paediatric Emergency Medicine in the Children’s Emergency Department (ED) at University Hospital Lewisham (UHL).

This is a substantive 10PA post. This post will be suitable for a Paediatrician with Grid training in Paediatric Emergency Medicine (or have equivalent experience but have not undergone Grid training) or an Emergency Medicine Trainee with subspeciality in Paediatrics. The job plan will vary according to the successful applicant. 

The Children’s ED UHL lies within the Division of Children and Young People’s Services (CYP) and has a high level of activity with approx-imately 30,000 attendances per year of 0-16 year olds.

There is a full complement of dedicated junior trainees, and Children’s trained nurses in the department, which is adjacent to the main ED. Nurses prescribe according to PGDs, and can order xrays at triage, and innovation is encouraged.

The postholder will be expected to have experience in paediatric emergency medicine and manage a wide range of general paediatric conditions, from management of acute medical presentations to care of children with injuries and trauma related conditions.

The department has close links with the adult ED, including Emergency Nurse Practitioners and the UCC. A Hospital@Home team has been developed to support the ambulatory part of the pathway, and a 4 bedded Short Stay Assessment Unit is adjacent to the department. The postholder will be one of 3 Paediatric ED consultants.

Applicants should have an appropriate CCT ( for paediatrics or Emergency Medicine) or be on the General Medical Council's Specialist Register.  Those who are within 6 months of obtaining their CCT on the date of the AAC are eligible to apply.
