QUEEN ELIZABETH HOSPITAL

DIVISION OF MEDICAL SERVICES

Applications are invited for a substantive Consultant post in Acute Medicine based at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Gateshead.

Applications are invited from enthusiastic and motivated individuals to join our Acute Medicine team in our high performing Trust. We are recognised as being one of the safest Trusts for patient care in the country by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) who awarded us a Band 6 rating and recently rated our standard of care as “Outstanding”. The Trust is keen to build on these achievements and is investing in enhancing our Acute services with planned expansions of both our Acute Medicine & Emergency Medicine consultant teams.

We are based in a brand new “state of the art” Emergency Care Centre (ECC) that opened in February 2015.  Last year, our Acute Medicine department, including our Ambulatory Care Clinic, saw over 20,000 patients. The department is supported by an acute “interface” geriatric service, and has on-site support 24 hours a day from Anaesthetics/Intensivists, a 24 hour Acute bleed endoscopy rota, and a recently adopted hyperacute stroke model. We have a weekly Acute Medicine teaching programme, and well-established Clinical governance and Morbidity & mortality review processes in place.

The Trust is well known locally for its friendly, collegial working environment and has an excellent reputation for teaching & trainee support. In September 2015, we were rated 1st nationally for both Overall Satisfaction at F1 level and Supportive Environment at F1 level. We also value personal development and offer mentorship to new consultants within our department for their first 2 years.

The contract for this post is for a full-time appointment, but applicants who wish to work less than full time will also be considered. There is flexibility within the job plan and current team structure for the new appointee to develop specialist expertise within their chosen field of interest. All applicants will be expected to hold or be within 6 months of CCT in Acute Medicine or equivalent.

Informal enquiries and visiting arrangements can be made by contacting Dr. M. Rynne, Clinical Lead for Acute Medicine, on (0191) 4458359 or Dr. K. Narayanan, Head of Service, Medical Business unit, on (0191) 4452856.
