Consultant in General and Respiratory Medicine with a community care interest
Applications are invited for a new exciting whole time Consultant posts in
General and Respiratory Medicine at Birmingham Heartlands Hospital (BHH)
from physicians with Respiratory interest, who are interested in integrated care. The post-holder will join a vibrant and dynamic team of 42 bed-holding Medical Consultants in one of the most innovative Medical units in the country. Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust (HEFT) is one of the UK’s largest acute NHS trusts and Heartlands is the site for all medical specialists on call services like Primary Percutaneous Coronary Intervention, Stroke Thrombolysis, Renal Dialysis and Respiratory Medicine with in-house Thoracic Surgery.
Historically the Respiratory department at Heartlands has worked closely with
the community and has the largest outpatient service in the West Midlands.
There is a large Respiratory Physiology department performing the full range
of respiratory and sleep measurements and Cardiopulmonary Exercise testing. Heartlands also regionally host the West Midlands Adult Cystic Fibrosis unit, Severe and Brittle Asthma services, Occupational Lung Disease Unit, Interstitial Lung Disease services, TB services and Sleep & Ventilation services.
Medicine as a whole comprises all major bed-holding specialties, including
large bed bases in purpose built Cardiology, Respiratory Medicine, Renal
Medicine, Infectious Diseases with negative pressure rooms, Elderly Care and Hyperacute Stroke Units. The Diabetes Centre at Heartlands Hospital operates as the main hub for all diabetes and endocrinology services at the Trust including diabetic retinopathy screening. There is a purpose built Endoscopy Unit which is being expanded and the Gastroenterology acute bed base is part of the Heartlands site. The medical bed base also includes wards covered by consultant colleagues in Haematology/Oncology, Diabetes and Elderly Care. The general wards on the Heartlands site operate a Royal College of Physicians recommended “Buddy Ward System” with surgical, trauma and orthopaedics bed bases within the site, enhancing the excellent orthogeriatric service which has contributed to a significant improvement to the quality and safety of patients with hip fractures. The Cardiology Unit undertakes a high volume of primary coronary interventions. The Renal Department is based at the Heartlands Hospital site and provides a full range of renal services including hospital haemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis and care for transplant recipients. Satellite renal units have been created to serve patients who live in the surrounding area, including Castle Vale, Balsall Heath, Solihull, Lichfield and Sutton Coldfield. Within the Department of Infectious diseases there is access to isolation and cubicle facilities for patients with tuberculosis. Rheumatology, Dermatology and Neurology provide a referral and outpatient service. Respiratory Medicine is served by a highly developed Non-invasive ventilation service with an 11-bedded Unit on ward 24 which is equipped for patients requiring assisted ventilation over and above the site’s Critical Care facilities.
There is a responsive Critical Care Outreach Team supporting the entire acute bed base. The post holder will be fully integrated into the Medicine consultant workforce, with an equitable share of junior medical staff and resources.
The attached job plan is a specimen and it may change according to the needs of the service, the post-holder’s specialty and future development - adhering to the generic allocation of Direct Clinical Care (DCC) and Supporting Programmed Activities (SPA) and the balance between Respiratory (50%) and General Medicine (50%).
