University of Otago and Southern District Health Board

Due to a recent retirement, an exciting opportunity has arisen for a specialist Rheumatologist to take up a full-time joint Academic and Clinical position within the University of Otago and Dunedin Hospital.

For your academic duties you will be based in the Department of Medicine, Dunedin School of Medicine, and will be appointed to the position of Lecturer or Senior Lecturer. You should have an academic qualification and prior experience in teaching and research. You would be responsible for teaching at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and would have unlimited possibilities for laboratory and clinical based research. Joining a team of well-established researchers, you will receive plenty of support for your research and have ample opportunity for meaningful collaborations.

The Rheumatology Research Unit is located within the Department of Medicine and has a long history of high quality research. You would be part of a team including a research nurse, doctoral and postdoctoral research students and Rheumatologist academic colleagues. You would be encouraged to develop your own area of research expertise which would be supported by the University’s ‘Arthritis Research Theme’.

Clinical responsibilities are based at Dunedin Hospital, a 400 bed university Hospital providing care for a population of approximately 300,000 spread over a large area of the lower South Island of New Zealand. You will participate in a 1:4 on-call roster and provide a full range of Rheumatology services alongside enthusiastic colleagues. Currently there are seven Rheumatologists all working part time. Familiarity or expertise in clinic based ultrasound would be a benefit as the unit has a clinic based ultrasound machine. You will need to have the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP) or equivalent qualification and must hold, or be eligible for, vocational registration with the New Zealand Medical Council.

Outside of work, you’ll find life in Dunedin to be very easy with its affordable living, great schools, laid back lifestyle and world-famous wildlife on the Otago Peninsula. The town centre is compact but has plenty of energy, which is to be expected with it being a student-town. This sustains some great activities such as theatre, live-music and a great selection of restaurants and cafes. Central Otago, with all of its great holiday spots and outdoor recreation opportunities is also easily accessible from Dunedin.

Please note that there is no formal closing date and applications will be considered individually on receipt. The University reserves the right to close this vacancy at any time.
