Consultant in Metabolic Medicine
This post has arisen as a result of expansion of the Adult Inherited Metabolic Department and to strengthen the service due to a senior member retiring.
Salford Royal Hospital is a large teaching hospital (over 7,000 staff) and is a centre of excellence providing specialist and tertiary services on a sub-regional, regional and supra-regional basis.
The Metabolic Medicine Department is a now well established unit, caring for approximately 500 people with Lysosomal Storage Diseases (LSD) and approximately 1000 people with other Inherited Metabolic Diseases (IMD). As such, it represents one of the largest Adult Metabolic Units within the UK and is one of five designated LSD centres supported by NHS England.
Specialist Multidisciplinary Clinics are presently provided by 4 Consultants and are supported by experienced Specialist Nurses, Dieticians, Physiotherapists, Pharmacists and admin members. The team supports outreach clinics in Bradford and Manchester inclusive of adult and transition from child to Salford adult services.
We enjoy close collaboration with our Paediatric colleagues in the Willink Centre, based at Central Manchester Children’s Hospital, to provide a complete and seamless service.
Testament to improved care, the life expectancy of patients with some IMDs has increased considerably and there is now a need to fortify and expand our adult service to deal with these complex patients prone to decompensation.
You will be a Senior Consultant in IMD with 5 years or more experience at Consultant Level and with a renowned track record in this field to support the service.
You will be experienced in the care of patients with a wide range of metabolic conditions and will have the expertise to help expand and develop the nutritional support for the service. Strong leadership, managerial and communication skills will therefore be required.
As a Teaching Hospital, you will be expected to demonstrate commitment to teaching both Undergraduates and Postgraduates.
The department has an active research portfolio, encompassing Phase I to IV clinical studies in a wide variety of metabolic conditions. The department is staffed with experienced Research Nurses and a Clinical Fellow, an onsite Clinical Trials Unit and collaborates with other Academic Units within the Trust.
There are strong links with the University of Manchester, Manchester Academic Health Science Centre (MAHSC) and work is supported by the Greater Manchester Collaborative Research Network (GM CRN).
Internationally renowned research facilities are available at the Clinical Research facility (CRF). It is anticipated that you would pursue and develop an active research portfolio.
