Taunton and Somerset NHS Foundation Trust is embarking on an exciting joint venture with the Dorset & Somerset Air Ambulance (DSAA). We are delighted to be inviting applications for two full time consultants to work across the 2 organisations.

About Us

DSAA operate from an airbase on the Somerset/Dorset border. They can be at any point in the two counties in less than 20 minutes of receiving an emergency call. The helicopter can then take a patient to any one of the Major Trauma Centres in the south west within a further 20 minutes. Carrying the latest equipment, and trialing new and innovative equipment, this enables the crew to save lives and manage patients’ conditions at the scene and during the journey to hospital.

In 2015 the DSAA flew 675 missions, 326 of which were in Somerset. 60% of the total missions were to patients suffering trauma. Every mission is the result of somebody suffering a potentially life-threatening injury or accident, demonstrating the need for the air ambulance.

Musgrove Park Hospital serves a population of 350,000 and has an excellent reputation for providing a comprehensive range of medical, surgical and specialist services. The Trust has been rated good in a recent CQC inspection, with an outstanding rating for patient care.

In 2016 we were selected to be a ‘Global Digital Exemplar’. One of only 16 Trusts who have been selected to trail blaze new ways of using digital technology, to drive radical improvements in the care of patients.

A number of consultants within the ambitious and enthusiastic ED team are active within national roles, including the National Advisor (A&E) NHS England and the RCEM Director for Revalidation. Musgrove is a designated trauma unit as part of the Severn Major Trauma Network.

The department has been expanded and refurbished and has a high quality 4 bed resuscitation room, dedicated paediatric resuscitation area, gantry x-ray, and a 12 bed majors area.
