Consultant in Infectious Diseases
Applications are invited for this replacement Consultant post to join the team of six other Consultants in our established Infectious Diseases department
The Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust encompasses Birmingham Heartlands Hospital, Good Hope Hospital, Solihull Hospital and Solihull Community Services and serves one of the largest populations of any NHS Trust.
The Directorate of Infection is based at Heartlands Hospital. It includes Departments of Infectious Diseases and Tropical Medicine, HIV and Clinical Immunology and Allergy. There is a purpose built facility housing outpatients and offices and meeting space and within the main hospital 2 wards covering a total of 46 inpatient beds.
The Infectious Diseases wards manage a broad range of infections. There is a significant burden of tuberculosis and imported infection in the population we serve. We provide inpatient care for HIV patients together with colleagues from the HIV service. Consultants on ward service (typically two at any time) attend the ward daily to review new and ill patients and expedite discharges in addition to regular scheduled ward rounds.
The wards also take general medical patients as part of our contribution to general medicine service within the hospital.

The post attracts 10 PAs, including 1.5 SPA with an opportunity to increase to 2.5 SPA for additional responsibilities agreed through job planning. The post holder will have responsibilities across the department responsibilities including inpatient care, infection consultation, OPAT service supervision, on call and outpatient clinics on a rotational basis.
The post holder will participate, with colleagues, in providing out of hours consultant cover for Infectious Diseases inpatients, outreach patients and consultations. At weekends and public holidays, the duty consultant conducts rounds on both wards with an on call specialist trainee. Predictable out of hours duty is incorporated into job plans as 0.7 PA based on a 1:7 rota.
